Description:
To present the students with metalanguage necessary for researching language and its structure. The objective is also to teach them to think abstractly about language as a phenomenon. Furthermore, to present them with contemporary linguistic theory and its terminology in order for them to understand language and language functions better. The objective is to acquire interdisciplinary approach to language with an emphasis on the principles of general linguistics and to learn the procedures which describe language structure in detail.
Introduction, course content and literature. Linguistics. Definition of language. Language and speech. Basic linguistic terminology. Language and language activity (langage). Language and metalanguage. Language and scripts. From pictogram to alphabet. Linguistic variety in the world. Linguistic relatedness. Language classification. About language by language: ancient linguistics. Universal grammar. Non-structuralist reflections on language: comparative approach. W. von Humboldt vs. the Neogrammarians. Biologism, psychologism, sociologism and aesthetic idealism in linguistic research. Sources of Saussurean linguistic theory. Contemporary structuralist linguistics. The Prague school and Martinetian functionalism. New theory of language: glossematics. Saussure and his epigones: similarities and differences. American linguistics and anthropology. Sapirian and Bloomfieldian theory of language. Language and culture. Transformational-generative grammar (TGG). Syntactic description according to TGG. Formalisations in linguistics. Mathematical linguistics. Mathematical language models. Contemporary Chomskian language architecture. Theoretical and applied linguistics. Linguistics and other sciences: interdisciplinary approach to language research. Linguistics as sociolinguistics. Psycholinguistics. Sociolinguistic, ethnolinguistic and psycholinguistic view of language and society. Cognitive linguistics and neurolinguistics.
Clinical and forensic linguistics. Perspectives of the theory of language. Pragmalinguistics: linguistics of public communication.
