Description:
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with theoretical concepts in toponymy, methods used in it and previous toponymic research in the eastern Adriatic coast. Through the introduction of toponyms and their linguistic basis, students are introduced to the cultural, historical, geographical, demographic and economic conditions on the eastern Adriatic coast. By independent (field) research of toponyms of the selected area, students are trained to study and explain their etymology and etiology, which finally gives a complete insight into the development and legality of naming geographical areas or populated areas, and through them insight into cultural, religious, traditional, ethnological, sociological and historical and national basis of toponyms. The main objectives of the course will be realized continuously through the study of Croatian coastal toponymic heritage, corpus collected (field research), its consideration and thus preservation of toponyms as permanent linguistic monuments that have recently disappeared and lost their function in the minds of residents / heirs.
Learning outcomes:
  1. be critical of previous toponymic research
  2. present publicly, in writing and orally, the results of independent field research
  3. independently conduct toponymic research applying the mastered method of collecting toponyms
  4. Appropriately philologically analyze data based on the mastered method of processing and interpretation of collected toponyms
  5. study scientific and professional literature and apply the acquired knowledge
  6. understand the specifics of language layers visible in toponymy
  7. discuss open issues in the toponymy of the eastern Adriatic coast
  8. to discover through toponyms the mental peculiarities and socio-economic orientation of the population in a certain area
  9. understand the linguistic symbiosis of Croats with other languages that have left their mark on the toponymy of the eastern Adriatic coast
  10. understand the relationships of toponymy as a linguistic discipline and geography, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology and other related sciences
