Although the concept of open science is not in itself new to scientific thought and the sharing of information, it represents a shift away from established patterns of publishing scientific research and contributes to more inclusive, efficient and equitable science that responds to societal challenges more quickly and effectively. Open science represents a change in research culture, shifting the emphasis from publishing as quickly as possible to sharing knowledge as early as possible, and adopting an approach to scientific research that promotes transparency, accessibility and collaboration at all stages of the scientific and research process.

The Faculty encourages the management of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles, according to which research data should be:

findable
accessible
interoperable
reusable.

The Faculty also promotes the comprehensive CARE principles for open science, which support an ethical and socially responsible approach to data management by emphasising:

collective benefit
authority to control
responsibility
ethics.

The Open Science Policy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split was adopted at the 1st regular session of the Faculty Council in the 2025/2026 academic year, held on 22 October 2025.
