The Exhibition “Literally About the Figurative”

At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split on 19 May 2026, the opening of the exhibition “Literally About the Figurative” was held, organized by the Centre for Foreign Languages and the Department of Italian Language and Literature.

The exhibition presented illustrations of idioms, that is, literal visual representations of selected Croatian idiomatic expressions together with their equivalents in English, Italian, French, and Spanish, as well as cards explaining the figurative meanings of the illustrated idioms.

The illustrations were created by students of the School of Design, Graphics and Sustainable Construction Split (mentors: Teodora Grgić-Jeličić, Antonela Zagorac, and Fabjana Jakovčić Čović) and the Second Gymnasium Split (mentors: Anamarija Brzica and Fani Marđokić). Students from the Second Gymnasium, together with their mentors, translated the idioms into foreign languages. Alongside the secondary school students and their mentors, first-year graduate students of Italian Studies also participated in the opening event.

The exhibition, which will remain open to visitors in the basement of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split until the end of May, was conceived and organized by Assistant Professors Antonia Luketin Alfirević and Andrea Rogošić.
