University graduate study programme

General information on the study programme:

The University Undergraduate Study Programme in Sociology (single-major), in addition to specialised sociological courses that are important for the education of Bachelor graduates in Sociology, as well as courses from related disciplines that broaden their education, places emphasis on methodological, research, and analytical knowledge and skills. The study programme prepares students for entry into the labour market and equips them for diverse professional conditions and requirements. A large number of elective courses have been designed to follow current social developments as well as students’ interests, thereby enabling them to acquire additional specific professional knowledge and insights, as well as to direct their studies towards specific areas. In this regard, the University Undergraduate Study Programme in Sociology educates Bachelor graduates in the field of social sciences who will be able to competently enter the labour market and develop into experts in their respective fields. Based on the knowledge acquired, the study programme will prepare Bachelor graduates in Sociology for professional and vocational work and provide the necessary competences for continuing their education and further development in university graduate study programmes in Sociology and related disciplines.

The University Graduate Study Programme in Sociology (single-major) follows in content the University Undergraduate Study Programme in Sociology in such a way that the acquired methodological, research, and analytical knowledge is expanded through courses with a methodological and research orientation that provide knowledge and competences for the preparation and implementation of quantitative and qualitative sociological research, adapted to the scientific and research interests of each individual student. The study programme educates Master graduates in the field of social sciences who will be able to competently navigate the labour market, develop into experts in their respective fields, and continuously promote fundamental social and humanistic values in their professional work. Within their profession, a Master of Sociology is therefore competent in recognising, researching, analysing, and interpreting social problems, while their role is also evident in proposing improvements and solutions. Based on the knowledge and experience acquired, this concept of the Sociology study programme prepares future Masters of Sociology for competent professional and vocational work. At the same time, it provides the competences necessary for continuing education and further development through postgraduate study programmes in Croatia and abroad.

On April 14, 2026, a member of our Department, Assoc. Prof. Toni Popović, gave a public lecture entitled Global Visibility – Local Silence: Internationalization and the Social Role of Science. The lecture was organized as part of the Tuesday Philosophical Chatter series at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Split. The presentation highlighted the key processes of internationalization of Croatian social sciences and humanities. Particular emphasis was placed on the increasing inclusion of journals in prestigious bibliographic and citation databases, as well as the increase in works in English, the participation of foreign authors, and topics that are less frequently directly related to Croatian society and culture. Such trends indicate the need for the so-called 'reflexive internationalization'. On the one hand, it implies opening up to the international scientific space, publishing in prestigious journals, participating in competitive projects, and inclusion in international research networks. In modern conditions of global connectivity, science can hardly develop within exclusively national frameworks. On the other hand, the importance of preserving the ideal of public science focused on local problems was emphasized. This ideal is promoted by strengthening domestic open access journals and developing topics and content in the Croatian language, accessible and understandable to the interested public. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of local potentials, including science and language, in theories of sustainable development, in the face of the challenges of uniformizing globalization and the process of 'McDonaldization'of society.

The Department of Sociology participated in the University Fair, held from 1 to 5 December 2025. During the event, visitors had the opportunity to learn about the curriculum, scientific and research work, professors, the experiences of current and alumni/alumnae students, and the numerous opportunities that the sociology study program offers to future students. Through direct communication with final-year high school students, study programs, examples of research projects, fieldwork, and international cooperation, as well as employment opportunities after graduation, were presented. Special emphasis was placed on critical reflection on society, understanding contemporary social processes, and developing analytical and research skills. We thank all visitors for their interest and pleasant conversations, and we look forward to future meetings with new generations of sociology students. We also thank all current and former students who participated in the preparation and implementation of the Department presentation.
