General information on the programme
We consider the foundations of the undergraduate and graduate study programme in Sociology at the University of Split especially significant because the sociological profession has an important role in creating a critical mass of highly qualified and educated people. Within a wider European environment sociologists are one of the major bonds inside interdisciplinary teams as leaders of social development.
The local enviroment of the city of Split (economic subjects, the city authority, the media, and so on) represents almost a quarter of the demographic make-up of Croatia; this is why it expresses the intense need for experts of social profiling who can, in a competent manner, explain past and present events and predict the future ones.
Every day an urgent need for the strenghtening and demarginalization of the social sciencies, especially inside the university, is expressed according to the labour market. In other words there are no unemployed sociologists in Split or outside of it, in the region. Because of the scope of their education they find jobs in different social areas –education, science, culture, the media or elsewhere. This proves the adaptability of sociological profession according to different professional conditions and requirements.
There is an evident interest for the study of sociology among the youth in Dalmatia. This programme, according to its structure, is essentially different from the already existing sociology programmes in Zagreb and Zadar. It is conceived as focused on research and methodological orientation with an emphasis on the special sociologies and workshop-type lecturers which meet the challenges imposed by modern tehnologies, communication, or in other words by the speed of the flow of information in modern society.
The conception of the programme is directed toward and supports the high level of competitivness of the University of Split at the state level as well as in relation to its Middle European and Mediteranean surroundings, in overall making sociological science Croatia defragmented. In this sense the sociology programme is comparable to the following curriculum programmes of some studies abroad, according to single subjects or as a whole: Department of Sociology – University of Essex; Department of Sociology & Anthropology – Carleton University; Department of Sociology – Humboldt State University; Dipartimento di sviluppo locale – Università di Teramo; Dipartimento degli Studi Sociali e Politici – Università di Milano; and Dipartimento di Sociologia – Università degli Studi di Genova.
The undergraduate study programme in Sociology is especially open to the mobility of students between universities in Croatia, those being: (1) University of Rijeka (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Pedagogy); (2) University of Zadar (Department of Sociology); (3) University of Zagreb (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology).
