European University of the Seas
The vision of the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) is to establish a distinctly international, pluri-ethnic, multilingual and interdisciplinary European University. SEA-EU aims to strengthen the links between teaching, research, innovation and knowledge transfer. It will encourage excellence in research and teaching to gain more knowledge and a better understanding and management of the marine environment. It will assist in building the human resources and skills necessary to match the needs of the evolving marine and maritime sectors, now and in the foreseeable future. SEA-EU will provide and improve tools and techniques to measure and anticipate ocean-based and driven impacts, build frameworks for more effective ocean governance as well as empower societies and communities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for the oceans. SEA-EU will actively foster an entrepreneurial, ownership-taking mind-set, supporting green/blue growth and sustainability. The SEA-EU alliance will also develop innovative pedagogies and promote the latest digital technologies in order to deliver personalized content, enable knowledge sharing, foster competitive skills and promote open science.
Digital identities, virtual masks – communicological, cultural, and economic aspects of the virtual representation of the subject (DIVIR)
The project “Digital Identities, Virtual Masks - Communication, Cultural, and Economic Aspects of the Virtual Representation of the Subject (DIVIR)
” is focused on an interdisciplinary study of digital identities and virtual masks as complex constructions emerging at the intersection of media, culture, society, and the economy. It is based on the assumption that contemporary identities in digital environments are shaped through narrative, visual, and communication strategies that carry tangible social and cultural implications. The research addresses theoretical and empirical gaps in existing studies, which often approach digital identities in a fragmented manner and without integrating different disciplinary perspectives. A particular emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between self-presentation, audiences, and platform environments in which identities are produced and circulated.
The research methodology is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches in order to capture the multidimensional nature of digital identities. The quantitative component includes survey research and statistical data analysis aimed at identifying patterns in the perception and consumption of digital personas. The qualitative component encompasses discursive, narrative, and visual analysis of digital content, as well as semi-structured interviews with relevant actors. The methodological framework is further expanded through digital ethnography and the analysis of platform practices, enabling an understanding of the dynamics of presentation, interaction, attention, and visibility.
The project is designed to integrate theoretical insights from multiple fields into a unified analytical framework. The research problem is examined from communicational, philological, sociological, and economic perspectives, with the aim of achieving a deeper understanding of how digital identities are formed, maintained, and utilized in contemporary society, particularly within the context of digital media. The project is funded by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU programme. The project duration is 48 months, from October 1, 2025, to September 31, 2029. The following institutions of the University of Split are involved in the implementation of the project: the Independent Study Programme in Communication and Media (project lead), the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Economics, the Independent Study Programme in Hospitality and Gastronomy, and the Faculty of Forensic Sciences.
