Hrvoje Relja graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Split, where he completed his degree on 17 June 1994 as the top student of his graduatiang class. In the same year, he began studying Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Society of Jesus, Zagreb, where he completed the first year of the programme. He continued his philosophical studies in Rome, Italy, at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, where he obtained the academic degree „Baccalaureum in Philosophia“ on 22 June 1996. This degree was recognised in the Republic of Croatia in 2000 as equivalent to a university degree qualifying for the profession of Professor of Philosophy. At the same institution, on 28 October 2000, he earned the academic degree Licentiatum in Philosophia, which was recognised in the Republic of Croatia in 2001 as equivalent to the academic degree of Master of Humanities, scientific field: Philosophy. Both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies were completed with outstanding success (magna cum laude, 9.5/10). In the academic year 2000/2001, he enrolled in the doctoral programme in Philosophy at the same university. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr Paul Haffner, he was approved to prepare a doctoral dissertation entitled “Il realismo metodico di S. L. Jaki. Dalla convinzione religiosa tramite il realismo moderato e la creatività scientifica fino al realismo metodico.” He defended his doctoral dissertation on 16 June 2008 with the distinction Magna cum laude probatus, thereby obtaining the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The dissertation was published as a book in October 2008, fulfilling the requirements prescribed by the Faculty Statute for the issuance of the doctoral diploma. The academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy was officially recognised in the Republic of Croatia by a decision of the Agency for Science and Higher Education in December 2008. In 2000, he commenced employment as a junior researcher at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Zadar, where he worked until his appointment at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split on 1 October 2007. He was elected to the academic rank of Assistant Professor (Docent) in the field of Humanities, discipline of Philosophy, sub-discipline of Ontology, on 1 July 2009.
