Mara Ruža Blažević was born in Subiaco, Australia, and holds dual citizenship (Croatian and Australian). Her native languages are English and Croatian. In 2019, she graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Split, earning the titles of Master of Education in English Language and Literature and Master of Pedagogy. She was among the top students of her generation, graduating with a master's degree GPA of 4.92. During her studies, she actively participated in the work of the Department of English at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split as a student teaching assistant. Through her involvement in iTHEom, the association of philology students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and in The Split Mind, the student journal of literature and culture at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, she began gaining her first professional experience in proofreading, interpreting and translation, as well as reviewing and editing student literary texts in English.
After graduating, in the autumn of 2019, she began gaining professional experience in teaching English (at the Wotan Language School in Solin and Jantar – International House in Split). She has taught learners of all age groups at various proficiency levels, including the highest level (C2), covering both General English and English for Specific Purposes, as well as preparation courses for internationally recognised Cambridge and IELTS examinations. From September 2021 to February 2023, she gained teaching experience at the higher education level: at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Split, she taught the courses English Language 1 and English Language 2. From March 2023 to September 2023, she served as an external associate at the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, where she taught the courses English Language – Communication Skills 3/Module 6 and Rhetoric of Speech and Writing. She worked with students on translating complex specialist texts from Croatian into English and taught techniques of rhetorical analysis of spoken and written English texts at the highest proficiency level (C2).
From April 2022 to April 2023, she was an authorised examiner for the internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL examinations (Cambridge Assessment English). She conducted speaking examinations and assessed candidates’ levels of language proficiency.
As a project team member, she participated in competitive Erasmus+ KA2 projects aimed at improving the teaching of English as a foreign language in the contexts of virtual reality, hybrid learning, and online instruction.
On 19 June 2024, Mara Ruža Blažević was appointed to the temporary teaching rank of Senior Language Instructor. Since March 2025, she has been employed as a Senior Language Instructor at the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.
