Biography

Nikola Sunara was born on 8 September 1988 in Split, Croatia. He completed both his primary and secondary education (First Gymnasium) in Split. In 2012, he graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Split with a degree in Croatian Language and Literature and English Language and Literature. During his studies, he was a member of the Student Council of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split and served as the student representative for Croatian Language and Literature in both the Department Council of Croatian Language and Literature and the Faculty Council.

In 2012, he enrolled in the postgraduate doctoral programme in Humanities, Literature and Culture module, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled Interferences of Oral Literature and Traditional Culture in Ivan Aralica’s Morlach Tetralogy (supervisor: Prof. Marko Dragić, PhD) on 18 April 2018, thereby earning the academic degree of Doctor of Science in the field of Humanities.

From 2012 until October 2016, he worked as a teacher of Croatian and English language and literature in primary and secondary schools in the city of Split. Since November 2016, he has been employed as a Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of Croatian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split. In November 2022, he was promoted to the position of Senior Teaching and Research Assistant, and in December 2023, he was elected to the academic rank of Assistant Professor. At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, he has taught courses within the Department of Croatian Language and Literature and the Teacher Education Programme, including: Croatian Oral Literature, Croatian Medieval and Renaissance Literature, Croatian Literature from the Catholic Renewal to Romanticism, Myths, Tales and Legends of the Croats, Croatian Hagiographic Heritage, Croatian Traditional Heritage in the European Context, Literature and Reality, and Croatian Literary Heritage.

During the term from the academic year 2020/2021 to the academic year 2022/2023, he served as the representative of employees in assistant positions on the Faculty Council. He has been a member of the Faculty Committee for Quality Enhancement for two terms and served as its Chair during the academic years 2024/2025 and 2025/2026. In this capacity, he also represented the Committee on the Faculty Council and on the Council of the University of Split Centre for Quality Enhancement.

He is a researcher on the scientific project Mediterranean – Croatia – Identity: Historical and Cultural Interactions (MEDHRID) and the author of scholarly papers in the fields of Croatian oral literature and Croatian intangible cultural heritage. He has presented papers at numerous national and international academic conferences and has also participated in the organisation of scientific conferences.

Under his supervision, approximately twenty undergraduate and graduate theses have been successfully completed, and he currently serves as co-supervisor of one doctoral dissertation.

In 2015, he participated in the establishment of the Alumni FFST, in which he has remained actively involved. He served as Vice-President during the first term, Treasurer during the second term, and currently serves as President of the Association. Together with his colleagues, he has helped organise numerous panel discussions, workshops, lectures, and quizzes on Croatian literature, culture, and history, aimed at promoting the humanities and bringing the activities of both the Faculty and the Association closer to the wider public. He has also participated in several humanitarian initiatives designed to encourage empathy, social responsibility, and support for those in need.

From January 2017 to January 2020, he was a member of the editorial board of Mogućnosti, a literary and cultural journal published by the Literary Circle of Split. He is a member of Matica hrvatska and the Literary Circle of Split.
