Nikša Varezić was born in Dubrovnik on 7 February 1978, where he completed primary school and later attended a general secondary school (gymnasium). In 1996, he enrolled in the single-subject History program at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, graduating in March 2003. He gained his first experience working with original archival sources in 1998 through participation in the Dubrovnik Medieval Studies Workshop, under the supervision of Professor Zdenka Janeković-Römer. In December 2004, he enrolled in the postgraduate doctoral program in Croatian History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, completing all program requirements except the dissertation.

Since 2008, he has been employed at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split. In the same year, he enrolled in the postgraduate doctoral program in Early Modern History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where he earned his PhD in March 2015 by defending his dissertation entitled “The Republic of Dubrovnik and the Holy See: From the Great Earthquake of 1667 to the End of the Morean War in 1699.”

During the 2009/2010 academic year, he pursued further professional training as a visiting student at the Department of Church History and Cultural Heritage of the Church at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. At the same time, during both the winter and summer semesters of 2009/2010, he attended courses and obtained a diploma from the Postgraduate Specialist Program in Archival Studies at the Vatican School of Palaeography, Diplomatics and Archival Science. On several occasions, he was awarded a research fellowship by the French research institution École française de Rome (during the winter semester of the 2013/2014 academic year and again during the same semester in 2015/2016), which enabled him to conduct further research in the Vatican Apostolic Archive and the Vatican Apostolic Library.

His research focuses on the Croatian and the Mediterranean history in the Early Modern period, with particular emphasis on the history of early modern diplomacy. He publishes in both Croatian and international scholarly journals and regularly presents his work at international academic and professional conferences in Croatia and abroad. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the scholarly journal Vjesnik dalmatinskih arhiva – Sources and Contributions to the History of Dalmatia.
