Magdalena Nigoević (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split; magda@ffst.hr) obtained her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Zadar (Croatia) with a dissertation about discourse markers in Croatian and Italian languages. She received her M.Phil. in General Linguistics from the University of Zagreb (Croatia). She teaches linguistics courses at the Graduate and Post-graduate Degree of the Department of Italian Language and Literature, at the Music Department of the Academy of Arts and at the Doctoral Degree Program in the Humanities of the University of Split. Her research interests are discourse studies, linguistic pragmatics, semantics, sociolinguistics and media language.

By decision of the National Council for Higher Education, Science and Technological Development dated 18 March 2024 (Reference No. NVVOZTR/23-00/00001), she was appointed a member of the Field Committee for the Humanities, specifically for the disciplines of Philology and Croatology, for a four-year term commencing on 15 April 2024, the date on which the Decision entered into force.
By decision of the Agency for Science and Higher Education dated 26 November 2024 (Reference No. KLASA: 030-02/24-02/51; URBROJ: 355-03-24-11), she was appointed as a representative of the Agency for Science and Higher Education and elected Chair of Sectoral Council XXV – Philology for a four-year term.
Research interests: contemporary Italian language, text linguistics, media language, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse studies, and contact linguistics, with particular emphasis on Italian–Croatian contrastive studies.
From 2018 to 2022, she served as President of the Split branch of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society (HDPL). Since 2022, she has been a member of its Supervisory Board, and since 2024 she has served as Chair of the Supervisory Board. She is one of the founders of the Dante Alighieri Society in Split and a member of several professional associations, including the Croatian Philological Society, the Association of LSP Teachers at Higher Education Institutions (UNJSVU), the Società di Linguistica Italiana (SLI), the Società Internazionale di Linguistica e Filologia Italiana, and the Associazione Internazionale Professori di Italiano.
From 2020 to 2021, she led the institutional project La rappresentazione dell'Amleto nel villaggio di Merduscia di Sotto – Translation of Ivo Brešan’s play Predstava 'Hamleta' u selu Mrduša Donja into the Istrian-Venetian dialect, involving collaborators from two Croatian universities and one Austrian university. The outcome of the project was the publication of the translation within a collected volume that, in addition to parallel dialectological versions of the play, also contains other scholarly contributions.
From 2001 to 2003, she was the principal investigator of the research project Monitoraggio e diffusione della lingua italiana e della sua cultura nell'area balcanica at DIPRI (Dipartimento di Ricerca Linguistica, Letteraria e Filologica) of the University of Macerata, Italy.
1991–2002 – Taught Italian and English in primary and secondary schools, as well as in private language schools in Split.
2002–2004 – Employed as a junior researcher on the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (MSES) project Dalmatia from the Fall of the Serenissima to the National Revival (Project No. 0258002), led by Prof. Lj. Šimunković, PhD, at the Department of Italian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split. In the same year, she began external teaching collaboration with the Academy of Arts in Split, where she continues to teach the course Italian Language at the Music Department.
2013–2016 – Taught the course Italian Language at the Music Department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Education, University of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2004–2010 – Teaching and Senior Teaching Assistant at the Department of Italian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.
1 July 2011 – Appointed Assistant Professor in the field of Humanities, discipline of Philology, specialization in Romance Studies, for the subject Italian Language at the Department of Italian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.
2014 – Promoted to the scientific rank of Senior Research Associate.
16 September 2016 – Elected to the academic rank and corresponding position of Associate Professor in the field of Humanities, discipline of Philology, specialization in Romance Studies, at the Department of Italian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.
2020 – Promoted to the scientific rank of Research Adviser (Scientific Counsellor).
16 December 2021 – Elected to the academic rank and corresponding position of Full Professor in the field of Humanities, discipline of Philology, specialization in Romance Studies, at the Department of Italian Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.
On 17 February 2026, she was appointed a member of the Council for Culture for Books, Publishing, and Library Activities of the City of Split for a term of four (4) years.
She was appointed to the Theatre Council of the Croatian National Theatre Split on 18 December 2021. At the inaugural session held on 12 January 2022, she was elected Chair of the Theatre Council. She served in this position until 28 August 2024.
