Biography

Marijo Krnić was born on 11 August 1980 in Split. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown. In 2003, he graduated from the Arts Academy of the University of Split, Department of Music Education, and obtained the professional title of Professor of Music Education. Owing to his high grade point average, he received the Academy Award for outstanding achievement during his studies. In 2008, he completed the postgraduate scientific study programme at the Department of Composition and Music Theory of the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana. He earned his Master of Science degree with the thesis The Interpretation of Madrigals by Iacobus Gallus under the mentorship of Professor Marko Vatovec, thereby obtaining the academic degree of Master of Science in the field of the Humanities, field of Art Studies, branch of Art Studies. In 2011, he graduated from the Department of Voice of the Arts Academy of the University of Split under the mentorship of Professor Nelli Manuilenko and obtained the title of Master of Music. He was awarded the Academy Award for outstanding achievement during his studies. In 2021, he completed the postgraduate doctoral study programme in Pedagogy at the Faculty of Science and Education of the University of Mostar and obtained the academic degree of Doctor of Science in the field of Social Sciences, field of Pedagogy, branch of Other Branches of Pedagogy. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled Changes in the Education of Solo Singers and Singing Teachers in the Bologna Process, under the mentorship of Professor Vedrana Spajić-Vrkaš, PhD, and Professor Snježana Dobrota, PhD.

From 2003 to 2008, he worked as a music teacher in six primary schools in Split-Dalmatia County, and in 2004 he passed the professional examination. From October 2004 to October 2008, he was an external associate at the Teacher Education College, later the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split, in the Early Childhood and Preschool Education Study Programme and the Teacher Education Study Programme. In October 2008, he was appointed to the associate grade of assistant and the corresponding position in the artistic area, field of music, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split. In October 2014, he was appointed to the teaching grade and corresponding position of lecturer in the artistic area, interdisciplinary artistic field, at the Department of Teacher Education of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split. In 2022, he was appointed to the scientific grade of research associate in the area of Interdisciplinary Fields of Science (Pedagogy; Music). In March 2024, he was appointed to the scientific-teaching grade and corresponding position of assistant professor in the interdisciplinary field of science and art at the Department of Teacher Education of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split. He writes and publishes scientific and professional papers in the fields of music education, higher education pedagogy, and vocal pedagogy. In 2023, he published the scientific monograph Primary Education in Zadvarje from 1902 to 1991: In the Context of Socio-Political Changes, and in 2025 the scientific monograph Music in the Contemporary Kindergarten, co-authored with Snježana Dobrota and Branimir Mendeš.

From October 2011 to September 2019, and again from October 2022 to September 2023, he was an external associate at the Arts Academy of the University of Split, at the Department of Voice and the Department of Theatre Arts. From October 2014 to September 2016, he was an external associate at the Department of Voice of the Faculty of Science and Education of the University of Mostar. Voice students whom he mentored in solo or chamber singing have received six awards in Zagreb, Osijek, and Opatija.

He has founded and served as artistic director of numerous vocal ensembles, including the Modo diverso Mixed Chamber Choir, the Špirit Female Klapa, the Cantores Maruli Male Vocal Ensemble, the Šufit Male Klapa, the Mirta Mixed Choir, the Chorus Spalatensis Male Vocal Ensemble, the Triglav Mixed Choir, the Female Chamber Choir of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, the Duare Male Klapa, the Basca Mixed Klapa, the Mixed Choir of the Croatian Navy, the Kostela Female Klapa, the Tusculum Male Vocal Ensemble, the Krunik Male Klapa, the Vruja Mixed Klapa, the Filip Dević – Ferata Mixed Klapa, the Delmati Male Klapa, and the Mixed Choir of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split. As a choir conductor and artistic director, he has won twenty awards at national and international competitions in Arezzo, Zagreb, Petrinja, Kaštela, Split, Bol, Omiš, Blato on Korčula, Karlovac, Posušje, Šibenik, and Perast. He is currently the artistic director of the Podvorje Male Klapa, as well as the parish choir and children’s parish choir of the Parish of St Anthony of Padua in Zadvarje.

As musical director of the project, he participated in the preparation and production of the musicals Our House in 2018 and Little Shop of Horrors in 2016, both produced by the First Gymnasium in Split and Astor College in Dover, UK.

As a solo singer, he has won four awards at international competitions, as well as the Darko Lukić Diploma of the Croatian Association of Musical Artists. He has attended numerous masterclasses and seminars in singing with Ruža Pospiš Baldani, Paolo de Napoli, Vladimir Vanjejev, Marvin Kenzee, Norma Enns, John Blakely, and Pinar Yildrim, and in choral conducting with Mats Nilsson and Ragnar Rasmussen. He has performed in numerous concerts in Croatia and abroad, including Italy, France, Monaco, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He appears as a soloist in projects of the Opera of the Croatian National Theatre in Split and the Opera Pannonica opera ensemble. He has appeared as a guest soloist at the renowned Teatro Verdi in Trieste and with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has served as a member of the artistic jury of the Cro Patria Days of Sacred Music, the Omiš Festival of Dalmatian Klapa Singing, the mo. Vinko Lesić Young Musicians’ Concert Series, and the international music festival for young musicians Imagine Festival. Since 2014, he has been a member of the committee for the Slobodna Dalmacija Award for the Arts and of the jury for the Porin discographic music award. From July 2010 to June 2016, he served as president of Jeunesses Musicales Split.

From March 2014 to December 2017, he worked as a music critic for the daily newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija. He was an external contributor to Cantus, the official journal of the Croatian Composers’ Society, and to Vijenac, the biweekly cultural magazine of Matica hrvatska. Since 2022, he has occasionally written music reviews and criticism for the portal Opera.hr.
