Ivana Restović, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Teacher Education Department at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, Croatia.
She graduated in Biology and Chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences in Split in 1998. She subsequently earned her Master of Science (MSc) in Basic Medical Sciences (Neuroscience) in 2007 and her PhD in Basic Medical Sciences (Cytology, Histology, and Embryology) in 2015, both from the University of Split School of Medicine. Between 1998 and 2011, she worked as a biology and chemistry teacher in several elementary schools in Split, mentoring students at regional and state competitions and heading the Expert Council of Chemistry in Dalmatia. In 2011, she transitioned to higher education, joining the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, where she served as the Head of the Teacher Education Department from 2020 to 2023.
Within the Natural Sciences, her core scientific and research activities are rooted in experimental biology and biomedicine, with a specific focus on the investigation of plant and animal tissues. Her methodological and laboratory research expertise encompasses advanced histological and immunofluorescence techniques, sample preparation for transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM), quantitative digital image analysis using ImageJ, and biostatistical analysis in GraphPad Prism. Her scientific expertise is reflected in 28 Web of Science (WoS) indexed articles. She actively contributes to the international academic community as a peer reviewer for international WoS-indexed journals, and she has comprehensive experience in academic publishing as an editor for conference proceedings of both international and domestic scientific conferences. In this scientific domain, she actively drives international and national collaborations, serving as the Institutional Leader for the SCIFine (Erasmus+ Forward) project and contributing as a Partner Researcher to several high-impact initiatives, including MELAtheKID (investigating melatonin's impact on renal development), RENEX (a Croatian Science Foundation project on diabetic kidney disease), and PIKBIO (an institutional research project aimed at building research and innovation capacity in biomedicine and natural sciences).
Her academic and research work uniquely bridges the gap between Natural Sciences and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Her teaching portfolio includes courses such as Natural Science, Environmental Protection, Climate Change Impact, and Man, Health, and Environment. To date, she has successfully mentored 38 graduate theses. Her expertise is further recognized through numerous invited lectures spanning the fields of higher education, sustainability, and natural sciences.
In the field of educational innovation and sustainability, her research focuses on investigating the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of future educators regarding the natural sciences and sustainable development. In this scope, she successfully led an institutional project as Principal Investigator aimed at developing scientific and ecological literacy among future teachers. This dedication to innovative pedagogy is further reflected in her past participation in the SHOUT project (Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance), an intersectoral initiative focused on social sciences and humanities outreach for sustainable educational and social innovations.
Assoc. Prof. Restović is actively engaged in institutional initiatives related to sustainability. Since 2022, she has been the Head of the Center for Transdisciplinary Promotion of Sustainable Development – OdRaST and the Chairman of the Committee for Monitoring the Activities of Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) at the University of Split. Internationally, she co-developed the Climate Change course for the SEA-EU 2.0 consortium's Joint Bachelor Programme in Sustainable Blue Economy and co-chaired the 1st International Scientific Conference: A Decade of SDGs (2015–2025). Furthermore, she is a member of the Croatian Microscopy Society and the European Microscopy Society, and a dedicated science communicator regularly contributing to the European Researchers’ Night and the Festival of Science.
