In the course titled European Literary Traditions students will be trained to think critically about world literature, first and foremost the literature of the Western civilizational circle. They will be acquianted with the most relevant writers and works of European literary tradition and the place and significance of world literature as the subject of study within literary theory. Students will perceive similarities and differences among various European national literatures as well as characteristics of shifts of literary periods and directions. Special focus will be on the problematics of the formation of the literary canon, levels of influence, reception, translation, dynamics of relationship between 'big' and 'small' European literatures and social, political and cultural forces which affect different aspects of literary activity.
