Description:

Definition of human language (as opposed to animal communication) and its basic features. Theories concerning the origins of language.Classification of linguistics: branches, disciplines, trends. Traditional and contemporary linguistics. Functions of language. Structural and generative linguistics. Phonetics and phonology of the English language. Morphology: concept and definition of morpheme, types of morphemes, allomorphs. Word formation processes: affixation, derivation, coinage, compounding, blending,
back-formation, conversion. Semantics: semantic features, semantic fields, synonymy and antonymy,
polysemy, homonymy, metonymy. Semantic features of fixed idioms and idiomatic expressions. Word play. Sociolinguistics: accent, dialect, idiolect, sociolect. Style, register, jargon. Psycholinguistics: language and mind. The processes of language acquisition.

Learning outcomes:

- define basic linguistic terminology;
- apply the acquired knowledge in the grammatical analysis and interpretation of
contemporary texts;
- specify and define basic syntactic terms;
- define basic concepts of linguistic disciplines (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.)
