Biography

Professor Gloria Vickov, PhD, was born on 5 June 1968 in Split. She studied at the University of Zagreb, where she graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1992, obtaining the professional title of Professor of English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature. She also completed her postgraduate studies in Foreign Language Teaching Methodology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where in 2001 she earned her Master of Science degree by defending a Master of Science thesis entitled "Writing Skills in L1 and L2 at an Early School Age", under the supervision of Professor Jelena Mihaljević Djigunović, PhD. She received her doctorate in November 2010 at the Department of English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, by defending a dissertation entitled "The Acquisition of Discourse Markers in English as a Foreign Language", also under the supervision of Professor Jelena Mihaljević Djigunović, PhD.

From 1995 to 1997, as an external associate, she taught English for Specific Purposes and German as an elective course at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Split. In 1997, she founded a private school of foreign languages in Split, where, alongside managerial responsibilities, she acquired many years of experience in teaching English and German. Since 2005, she has been teaching at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, at the Department of Teacher Education where she coordinates the early EFL learning and teaching module. She was appointed to the academic rank and position of Assistant Professor in 2011, Associate Professor in 2017, and Full Professor in 2022.

Since 2007 she served two terms as the representative of teaching-rank faculty in the Council of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, and from the academic year 2010/2011, also for two terms, she was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, serving as its vice-chair in her second term.

She held the office of Vice-Dean for Teaching and Student Affairs during the academic years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.

From the academic year 2017/2018 to 2022/2023, over two terms, she served as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split.

She developed numerous new courses in EFL Teaching Methodology at the Department of Teacher Education, as well as courses in English for Specific Purposes at the Department of Pedagogy and within the Hotel Management and Gastronomy study programme at the University of Split. She also developed new courses for doctoral programmes at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb, as well as at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split.

Since 2018, she has been actively involved in the internationalisation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split and the University of Split. In October 2018 she was appointed Adviser for International Cooperation to the Rector of the University of Split, for the mandate period from 1 October 2018 to 30 September 2022. In December 2018 she was appointed a member of the Committee for Drafting the Proposal for the Internationalisation Strategy of the University of Split, and in January 2020 she was appointed Chair of the Identity Committee on behalf of the University of Split within the international scientific and professional project The European University of the Seas (SEA-EU). At her initiative, in the academic year 2021/2022 the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split launched the undergraduate university study programme in Psychology delivered in English, the first study programme of its kind in the Republic of Croatia and in this part of the European higher education area. At the University of Split, she also initiated the introduction of compulsory instruction in Croatian language and culture for all international students. This initiative led the Centre for Croatian Studies Abroad at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split to develop a proposal for the lifelong learning programme Croatian Language and Culture for Foreigners, which was adopted by the Senate of the University of Split in September 2018. In June 2020 she was appointed a member of the Governing Board of the University Library in Split. She was also a member of the Council of the university study programme Hotel Management and Gastronomy at the University of Split.

For her outstanding contribution to the development of the University of Split through distinguished work in the scientific and professional fields, she was awarded the Plaque of the University of Split on 15 June 2020.

Within the framework of the bilateral mobility programme in higher education (Erasmus) for the academic year 2008/2009, she was an invited lecturer at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor (Republic of Slovenia), and in 2011 at the international scientific conference EFFLAT 2011 in Zagreb. She also delivered invited lectures in September 2017 in Zagreb at the 2nd Symposium of the Early Language Learning Section of the Croatian Philological Society, and in October 2025 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, within the international scientific conference "14th Primary School Days: The Circle from Science to the Classroom".

She has reviewed many papers in the field of EFL learning and teaching, including contributions to Školski vjesnik, the Proceedings of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society, the Proceedings of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, and Strani jezici, and has reviewed three scientific monographs. She also reviewed the New Building Blocks textbook series for English as a foreign language for grades 1 to 3 (published by Profil), as well as the university course textbook English for Teachers, published by the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb (2014).

She was a member of the Editorial Board of the scholarly journal Školski vjesnik, as well as a member of the scientific and organising committees of numerous international scientific conferences.

She publishes her work in reputable Croatian and international scholarly journals and with prominent publishers, and presents at numerous international and Croatian scientific and professional conferences. To date, she has published two scholarly monographs, one as sole author and one as co-author. Her most significant scholarly contribution lies in defining a new paradigm in the field of foreign (English) language learning, particularly with regard to recognising the importance, advantages and positioning of the source (Croatian) culture in the development of intercultural communicative competence. She is also one of the pioneers in the study of discourse markers in the process of learning English as a foreign language.

Under her supervision and co-supervision, many graduate theses have been completed. She has served as chair and member of expert committees and graduate thesis defence committees at her home faculty, as well as chair of a doctoral dissertation defence committee at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. At the same faculty, in 2021 Eva Jakupčević defended her doctoral dissertation, entitled Discourse Markers in the Speech of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language, under her supervision. In September 2018, she was also appointed as one of the evaluators of the doctoral dissertation Student Perception of Teacher Assessment in Croatian Secondary Schools at Edith Cowan University, Australia.
