International Academic Conference Kroatische Filmbeziehungen (Croatian Film Connections)

As part of the competitive research project German-Croatian Film Connections between Expressionism and Escapism, the hybrid international academic conference Kroatische Filmbeziehungen (Croatian Film Connections) was held from 3 to 4 November 2025, organized by the Department of German Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.

The conference was officially opened by Associate Professor Nikša Varezić, PhD, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, and Professor Marijana Erstić, PhD, from the Department of German Language and Literature.

The conference was dedicated to exploring Croatian film connections, from the first film screenings held in Zagreb in 1896, through the era of silent film and co-productions in the former states, to contemporary examples of cinema. Particular emphasis was placed on German-Croatian film relations, as well as on the connections between Croatian cinematography and other countries, including Austria, the United States, and Slovenia. The conference concluded with comparative analyses of contemporary German and Canadian cinema.

The programme included both online and in-person presentations. Scholars from Austria (Vienna), Croatia (Split and Zagreb), Finland (Helsinki), and Germany (Landau, Leipzig, and Siegen) participated in the conference.
